Speaker: Zineb Mohssine

Talk Title: Metagenomic analysis of the marine ecosystem microbiome

Abstract:

Metagenomic is a branch of bioinformatics which studies the diversity of organisms that can not be seen under the microscope or grown in culture. Zineb will talk about the history of metagenomic, the diversity of the marine ecosystem and the techniques used to generate insights about the organisms living in water samples.

Speaker: Assya Trofimov

Talk Title: Factorized embeddings learns rich and biologically meaningful embedding spaces using factorized tensor decomposition

Abstract:

Assya is interested in representation learning for genomics. She will talk about the deep learning algorithm she developed (reference below) for dimensionality reduction. Applied to RNA-Seq dataset, the factorized embeddings can be seen as a compressed version of the data, but one that retains the meaningful biological information associated with the genes and the samples.

Recap

MonBUG has officially launched its 2021 meetings. Thank you all for attending the February meeting. We had two great presentations from Zineb Mohssine and Assya Trofimov and we had great questions and discussions. For those of you who could not attend, the recording is available on MonBUG YouTube channel.
